Who is Errante Gaetano from A Bell for Adano and what is their importance?

Errante is the man who becomes known for stopping the army's progress into Adano. Actually, it's errantes mule that refuses to move, and as a result, the mule is killed by General Marvin. Ironically, after Errante replaces the mule, a similar event occurs.
