Two of the main settings to the novel, the Jennings' home and the Beau Rivage Casino Hotel, are luxurious, speaking of great amounts of money and comfort. This is starkly contrasted by the small cabin where Abby is held and the clinical office of the FBI. These settings are symbolic of the two classes of people involved in the story, the rich doctors and their families and the poor, desperate kidnappers.
