Discuss what happen to Mathilde in The Diamond Necklace. Why did it happen? How could it have it been different?

Maathilde's life was turned upside down when she 'lost' her friend's necklace, and then subsequently lost everything in an attempt to replace it. In the end, Mathilde finds that her life was changed for naught.... the necklace she needed to borrow because it spoke to wealth wasn't real.... and the time and money that it cost her was ironically for nothing.
