What was the cause of one of the major events in the story? in other words, WHY did this event happen? Was it something someone did or said?

Its a question for my English homework and I really need to know A.S.A.P!!!!

In a book like this, cause and effect are difficult to pin down. However, you could talk about how the sister is affected because of her sister's disappearance. Or, you could talk about how the boy that was interested in her changed as a result of having known her.
