The language of the novel is simple. The people are from a small town with only high school educations so the language they use is simple. They are expressive and their language shows their inner thoughts and how they view the world and people around them. Harry uses a lot of sexual references as his thoughts are often about women and sex. Eccles’ language is spiritual. He references the bible and poetry. Lucy Eccles likes to talk about psychology so she mentions Freud and psychological theories. So the language reflects the characters giving the reader an insight into the character and what they represent.
