Why were Peter and Pavel driven from their town?

In My Antonia, Book I, Pavel and Peter were driving the sledge carrying the newlyweds. When they attempted to lighten the load to make faster time, Pavel threw the couple to the wolves. The shame of their actions led to them being driven from their hometown and later from Russia.
