At the start of the novel, Matilda views her mother in the same way most teenage girls view their moms.... the rules, the lectures, the expectations.... all are seen as annoying. Over the course of the novel, her mother's illness, and the fear that her mother has died, both serve to transform or illuminate Matilda's true feelings.... her love and loyalty.
