In Black Boy, Ch 1, what happened at the grocery store?

In Chapter One, Richard's mother sends him to the grocery store. When he returns home after having his money stolen by some boys on the street, his mother gives him more money and a big stick to face the boys who stole from him. In response, Richard runs down the street viciously swinging the club, and he returns with the groceries. Richard is only six years old.
