Lesson 1 (from Part I (Pages 1 - 32))
Objective
The objective of this Daily Lesson is for students to analyze Hunt's descriptions of Zorrie's childhood in Part I and to explore how these descriptions develop Zorrie's character. Zorrie is the victim of hardship and circumstance from an early age after losing both her parents in quick succession to diphtheria. Zorrie's only relative available to take her in is a bitter elderly aunt who provides little to no affection for Zorrie. The aunt pulls Zorrie from school when Zorrie is only 15, despite Zorrie's promise as a student. And when the aunt dies, Zorrie is left homeless and penniless.
