1. What is the setting of "The Clancy Kid"?

The setting is a Sunday evening in July, in a small town in Western Ireland. The action takes place at a pub called Dockery's and at a wooden bridge that crosses the river between the town and a housing estate.

2. What are the two other names that Tug is known by, and how did he get them?

Tug's birth name is Brendan Cuniffe; he was named Brenden for a deceased older brother. He is also called "Manchild," but only behind his back. He is called this because he is a big man, capable of fits of aggression, but he is also childlike in the way he sometimes relates to others.

3. What is the relationship between Jimmy and Marlene?

Jimmy and Marlene have known one another and been casual lovers for a long time, but Jimmy does not actually consider her a steady girlfriend. It is when she has a child with and becomes engaged to another man that Jimmy realizes the depth of his feelings for Marlene.
