Lesson 1 (from Section 1: "The Clancy Kid")
Objective
Students will explore the setting of small-town Western Ireland used in Young Skins.
Collin Barrett was born in Canada, but grew up in Co. Mayo, Ireland, from the age of four. He lived near the town of Ballina, in the village of Knockmore. Although students may be familiar in a general way with Ireland and Irish culture, Young Skins is decidedly regional in its approach, and students will better appreciate the subtleties of Barrett's work with a better understanding of the cloistered world of his fictional town of Glanbeigh. This lesson introduces students to some of the traditional values of Western Ireland, the geography and isolation of Co. Mayo, and the cycles of economic boom and bust that have impacted this area. Finally, it asks them to consider what ideas about this area an author such as Barrett might want to communicate.
