Section 1: "The Clancy Kid"

• "The Clancy Kid" begins by establishing the setting: a small town off the coast of western Ireland (revealed in a later story to be the fictional town of Glanbeigh, Co. Mayo).
• The narrator introduces himself: "I am young, and the young do not number many here, but it is fair to say we have the run of the place" (1).
• The story opens on a Sunday evening in July, after the narrator, Jimmy Devereux, has been drinking heavily the previous two nights.
