Lesson 1 (from Part I (Pages 1 - 86, Chapters 1 - 4))
Objective
The objective of this Daily Lesson is for students to analyze Stuart's development of Mo-Maw's character in Part I. When the reader meets Mo-Maw, she is sending her youngest child, Mungo, off on a several days-long fishing trip with two strangers she has only met once. Mungo does not want to go, but she is terribly relieved when he leaves, and she immediately begins drinking alcohol. Stuart shows Mo-Maw's selfishness all throughout Part I, leaving the reader with the sense that she has almost no redeeming qualities.
Lesson
Class Discussion: Who is Mo-Maw? How does Stuart develop her character throughout Part I? How do different characters like Mungo, Jodie, and Hamish view Mo-Maw differently? Why?
Small Group Activity: Divide the class into small groups and ask each group of students to create a list titled "Mo-Maw's Core Characteristics." Ask students to go back through Part I...
