Lesson 1 (from Chapters 1-6)
Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to explore the exposition of the novel. Students will identify and analyze elements from the first six chapters in order to understand the main characters and the setting and to identify any potential conflicts and themes the plot might contain.
The first few chapters of the novel introduce the reader to Joe and Beck. The reader is introduced to Joe’s obsession as well as themes such as privacy and the dangers of technology. Finally, readers are introduced to potential conflicts, such as Joe’s internal conflict as well as his conflicts with Beck and nearly everyone in her life.
