Objective
"You Learn by Living" by Eleanor Roosevelt is an educational book that was inspired by the desire to respond to the letters she had received asking the former First Lady of the United States about guidance and help with given problems. Today's lesson is about the power of writing letters and their affect on the social history of a nation.
Lesson
1) Begin the class by reviewing some of the letters sent in to Eleanor Roosevelt as well as letters written to and by former Presidents over the past 100 years.
2) Review with the class the main areas of concern from the people. Categorize these concerns in a graphic organizer on the board and include political, economic, and social problems, concerns, and suggestions.
3) Next, have students create a new graphic organizer and lists the political, economic, and social questions of the modern era, specifically the millenium.
