• There are not many people around to do work; the village is quiet and desolate.
• Elizabeth Bradford comes and demands to see the rector.
• The rector tells Anna to tell Miss Bradford to go to hell.
• Miss Bradford will not leave; she tries to push past Anna.
• The rector comes out and tells her to leave.
• Miss Bradford starts crying, Anna comforts her.
• Miss Bradford leaves; Anna tries to read the rector a passage from the Bible.
• The rector reads another passage and lets the Bible fall to the floor.
