1. What are the circumstances surrounding the argument in the opening episode of The Wrestling Match?

The opening scene of Dr. Buchi Emecheta's The Wrestling Match transpires in the African village compound of elder Obi Agiliga. In this episode the silence of the Nigerian evening is broken by Obi Agiliga's senior wife, Nne Ojo, yelling at his sixteen-year-old nephew, Okei. She is frustrated with her nephew for the youth's sullen poor manners. Okei's uncle enters into the dispute between the two.

2. How has Okei come to live with Obi Agiliga and Nne Ojo?

Okei grew up in Nigeria during the Nigerian-Biafran War that transpired in the late 1960s. The youth's parents are both murdered during that violent conflict, leaving Okei without family and homeless. He is taken in by Obi Agiliga and Nne Ojo, his uncle and aunt respectively. Although they have taken the youth in and adopted him, the conflict and the loss of his parents has left Okei confused and rootless.
