Lesson 1 (from Front Matter and Part One)
Objective
The objective of this lesson is to examine the impact of front matter on Wolf Hall. As paratextual material, front matter can be set aside in favor of the main text of the novel—although it is also the case that front matter often illuminates and clarifies things in the main text.
Lesson
Class Discussion: What is front matter? What kinds of books normally have front matter? What functions does it serve? Do those functions carry through to Wolf Hall? How or how not?
Group Activity: Guide student discussion through examination and interpretation of the front matter of Mantel’s book, such as the cast of characters. What function does it serve? How does it do so? Why is it important? Does it distract? How so? Write student answers on the board.
