Lesson 1 (from Chapters 1-7)
Objective
Students will investigate Applegate’s purpose in using an epigraph to begin the narrative of Wishtree and will make predictions about its possible connection to the thematic messages within the text.
The epigraph Applegate includes at the start of the novel Wishtree is a poem by Mary Carolyn Davies from 1924. The poem is entitled “Be Different to Trees” (vii) and its lines revolve around the idea that only those who are quiet long enough to truly listen are the ones who will gain the most wisdom. Thus, Applegate’s chosen epigraph introduces many of the text’s major themes such as communication, collectivism, and the mysteries inherent in the natural world.
