Lesson 1 (from Part One: 1-3)
Objective
The objective of this lesson is to examine the point of view of Chapters 1-3 of the novel and how the author's choice of viewpoint affects the story. Although the story in Chapters 1-3 moves from a scene with the Grand Prince, to Vasya and Marya, to Olga's workroom, and then to the mob scene, the action is told through a narrator. Since the narrator only relates incidents that a particular individual has participated in, Chapters 1-3 are told from a third-person limited point of view.
