Objective
The objective of this lesson to examine how and why Willa steals, and what is communicated about empathy. Willa creeps through the night to a homesteader's lair. Her clan leader sends youngsters like Willa to steal from the homesteaders.

Class Discussion: Where is Willa going in Chapter 1? Why is she headed toward a homesteader's lair? What does she hope to find there? How has the padaran sent her and why? What concern does she have for the day-folk and their children that causes her to only take half of what she finds? What does she find on top of a black book? Where does she see an identical ring? Would the padaran like to have a ring like that? What would the padaran think if he knew she did not take the ring? How might she be rewarded for taking the ring? What stops her...
