· In “The Great Smoky Mountains, 1900,” Willa overhears day-folk men talking about whether the earth is flat or round.
· She knows they are both wrong.
· The world is mountains.
· In Chapter 1, Willa slips through the forest following the scent of chimney smoke.
· When she comes to the river, she avoids the dangerous currents by asking the trees to help her across.
· When she climbs, the branches of the trees hold her gently and take her across.
· She thanks the trees when she is safely on the other side.
· She sees her reflection in the water.
· She is a 12-year-old “forest girl with long, dark hair, a rounded face with streaked and spotted skin, and emerald-green eyes” (2).
· She wears no fabric or jewelry that might flash...
