· In the Prologue, Wildoak Forest is quiet until something new happens in the forest.

· A van drives up the lane and a man gets out with his flashlight.

· He opens a cage.

· In Chapter 1, “February 1963, London, England,” Maggie Stephens is in class and about to be called upon to read aloud.

· She knows that she will not be able to read without stuttering and the other students will laugh and make fun of her.

· She wonders if some of the girls might not tease her.

· The teacher calls on Maggie to read.

· Someone giggles.

· Maggie decides she has only one option.

· She drives her pencil deep into her palm.

· The pain surprises her.

· She shows her teacher her hand and she is sent to Nurse Nora.
