When Onyesonwu and her mother come to live in Jawhir, when she is six, her mother sells cactus candy in the marketplace. Oneyesonwu helps her, and she is allowed an hour a day to wander the market. She wanders into what seems to be a cave full of fire and noise. The sign above the building indicates the place is a blacksmith's shop. She gives the blacksmith some of her water, and they introduce themselves.
