Lesson 1 (from Chapters 1-17)
Objective
The objective of this lesson is to discuss the Ewu and the unfair stigma they bear. Ewu are children who are usually conceived when a Nuru man rapes a Okeke woman. The children are ostracized because of the circumstances of their conception.

Class Discussion: How did Najeeba become pregnant by a Nuru man? How degrading and painful was the experience for her? Why did her husband reject her when she returned to her village? Why do Okeke women not terminate their pregnancies? How do Ewu look different from their mothers and other Okeke? How are Onyesonwu and Mwita treated because they are Ewu? How is being Ewu a lifetime stigma and disgrace? Why are they stigmatized?
Activity: Divide the students into small groups. Have each group whether it is equitable to stigmatize the Ewu and their mothers. Are Ewu children or their mothers responsible for...
