Lesson 1 (from Prologue & Chapter 1 )

Objective

The objective of this lesson is for students to expand their knowledge of the author's, Carol Anderson, background and what led her to write White Rage. Students will identify the writer’s main argument and analyze the examples used to bolster her argument. Student will employ active reading to better understand a written piece.

Lesson

Class Discussion: Who is the author of White Rage? What is her background? What does she do for a living? How does this relate the subject matter?

Individual Activity: Hand out a copy of Anderson’s 2014 Washington post Op-Ed referenced in the Prologue and have students read on their own - taking notes, highlighting, underlining things of interest.

Small Group Activity: Divide students into small groups and ask students to define white rage and Black rage according to Anderson’s Op-Ed. What event in Ferguson, Missouri prompted Anderson to write this...
