It is summer in Los Angeles when the novel begins, and the oleanders have begun blooming. Ingrid mentions that this time of year is the time when somebody could kill their love and blame it on the winds. This lesson will explore the foreshadowing behind this statement and the oleanders blooming.

Lesson

1. Class discussion: Why do you think that Ingrid says that the time of year is the time when lovers could kill each other and blame it on the wind? What causes Ingrid to say this? What might this foreshadow for the rest of the novel's events? Do you think that it will translate literally in foreshadowing an actual death, or do you think it is something more metaphorical?
