Objective
Students will analyze the format of the novel and consider various letter formats' impact on the reader. Students will understand the definition of author’s craft and explore how format falls into that category.
Semple writes her novel in an unconventional fashion. The novel is written in a series of letters, bulletins, and narrative interjections from Bee. This allows Semple to develop her characters from multiple points of view, using multiple voices.
Lesson
Class Activity: The teacher will give the students the definition of author’s craft. As a pre-reading assignment, students will flip through the text, noting Semple’s decision to write the novel in a series of letters with areas of narration by Bee. Students will answer the question: What impact on the text could this format have as opposed to a more traditional chapter format?
