Objective

Chapter 1

The novel opens with a traveler's comments about how the Luther's land is the fairest he has ever seen. Mary Call's response is that the land is horrible and ugly in the winter. The objective of this lesson is to study the contrasts of the land in winter and summer and what that illustrates as we continue through the novel.

Lesson

1) Class discussion: What is noteworthy about the traveler's comments compared to Mary Call's regarding the Luther's land? How do they differ? From what we know about the Luther family so far, what do you think the beauty of the land represents? What about the ugliness in the winter that Mary mentions in chapter 1? Be sure to mention the theme of the land representing the family's struggles as a theme that will continue throughout the novel.
