Lesson 1 (from Prologue to Chapter 6)
Objective
The objective of this lesson is to discuss the author and her writing. Delia Owens is a zoologist who spent many years living in isolation with her husband in Africa. Where the Crawdads Sing is her first novel.
Lesson
Class Discussion: What freedom does Owens find in writing fiction? How do Owens' experiences as a zoologist living in isolation much of her adult life influence her fiction writing? What has influenced her writing? What writing competition did Owens win when she was in sixth grade? How did that influence her desire to write? What type of fiction does she want to write in the future?
Activity: Divide the students into small groups. Have each group create a chart or poster that shows these things: books Owens has written, awards she has won for writing, what critics say about her writing, and what different genres she writes...
