Lesson 1 (from Part 1: "The Waning Light," Chapters 1 - 2)
Objective
This lesson introduces students to Kenyan author Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o's historical novel, Weep Not, Child, and focuses on setting and historical context. Weep Not, Child is set in the village of Mahua in Kenya in the 1940s and 1950s. The Mau Mau Uprising (1952-1964) is the central backdrop of the narrative. Students in this lesson will research this conflict and will analyze and discuss the setting as established by the author in Part 1: "The Waning Light," Chapter 1.
