Lesson 1 (from Part I (Pages 1 - 73, Chapters 1 - 8))

Objective

The objective of this Daily Lesson is for students to analyze Lama's description of the treatment of Tibetans by the People's Liberation Army, or, as the Tibetans call them, the "Gyami." In Part I, Lama describes how Lhamo and her family and neighbors are terrorized by the invaders and driven from their homes beginning around 1960.

Lesson

Class Discussion: Who are the "Gyami?" What details does Lama provide to the reader about the forces and people invading Tibet? How does Lhamo understand the events shaping her life in Part I?

Small Group Activity: Divide the class into small groups and ask each group to create a list titled "People's Liberation Army/Gyami - Treatment of Tibetans." Students should go back through Part I and document Lhamo's perceptions of what happens to her people at the hands of the invaders. When students finish their lists, regroup to share...
