The story is firmly grounded in the American Midwest of the early 1960's--a period of time that students may have misconceptions about, particularly where sexual matters are concerned. This lesson sets the stage for their reading of Dybek's story by introducing them to accurate information about the sexual mores of the early 1960's and by asking them to make predictions about the perspective of a young man in this time period.
