· The narrator notes the venue of the party—“Octavia Whitmore’s mansion on the Avenue of Streetcars” (3)—and the honor of being invited, as well as the surprise of being told to appear in costume.
· The narrator’s costume—he is dressed as a Roman centurion—is described in some detail and contrasted with those of his associates, Franklin (dressed as a server) and Riley (dressed as a prison inmate).
