Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to analyze the beginning of Mabel's visit to Marin in Part I. At this point in the novel, the reader knows there is some awkwardness, anger and confusion between the former best friends, and that part of it is due to Marin's behavior after the sudden death of her grandfather, Gramps, who was her only real living relative. Marin is simultaneously looking forward to and dreading Mabel's visit in Part I, and when Mabel shows up at her dorm room a few days before Christmas, Marin feels a bit as if they are strangers.
