Objective
The objective of this Daily Lesson is for students to analyze the symbolism Spiotta assigns to Sam's new house. In the book's first chapters, Spiotta makes it clear that Sam's decision to leave her husband Matt after decades of marriage is directly linked to Sam's discovery of the dilapidated Arts and Crafts cottage in a run-down part of town. Sam realizes she has been unhappy in her life and her marriage for some time, but it is not until she sees the house for the first time that she seems to believe she has a tangible way to leave. For Sam, the house represents both a sanctuary and an escape.
