Lesson 1 (from Part I (pages 1 - 50))
Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to analyze the significance of Rachel's discovery of Rose's packed steamer trunk in Ruvigny Gardens. Rose, Nathaniel's and Rachel's mother, makes a show of choosing everything she is packing to take to Singapore before leaving the children in the care of several men who the children suspect may have criminal backgrounds. When Rachel finds the trunk hidden in the basement some time after her mother's departure, it is the beginning of the end of the children's trust in Rose.
Lesson
Class Discussion: How does the way in which Rose packs her trunk make Rachel's discovery of it some time later all the more dramatic? Why do you think Rachel chooses to show Nathaniel the trunk? How do each of the children react to the discovery of the trunk?
