• Part One is titled "A Table Full of Strangers" and begins in 1945. The novel is written in the first-person past tense through narrator Nathaniel Williams.
• Nathaniel was 14 and his sister Rachel was almost 16 when their parents informed them they will be moving to Singapore without the children for work for about one year.
• The parents left the children in the care of two men whom Nathaniel and his sister thought could be criminals.
• Mr. Williams worked for Unilever. Though not close, his father took Nathaniel to the office once, where Nathaniel remembered a large display of maps showing Unilever's offices all over the world.
