· In Chapter 1, Joey, part-Thoroughbred red-bay, and his mother, an Irish draft horse, are brought to auction when he is not quite six months old.
· His mother sells quickly, but he is wild with fear and it takes time to sell him.
· A gruff-sounding farmer who is drunk buys Joey for three guineas and takes him to his barn.
· Zoey, the old cart horse, tells Joey that everything will be okay.
· The farmer’s son, 13-year-old Albert Narracott, and his mother come to look at him.
· Albert is surprised that his father bought the colt since he was supposed to buy a calf.
· Mother thinks that Father bought the horse to spite Farmer Easton.
· Albert soothes Joey by petting him and speaking quietly.
