Objective: The opening pages of the play discuss the set design, in terms of object placement, props, and opening character placement. Understanding the basic elements of a set helps the audience to understand the context of the play, the time frame, and prop elements important to the plot. This lesson will discuss the concept of set design.
1. Class discussion: What elements of this particular set help the audience to understand the setting of the play? The time? Could these elements be conveyed in any other way in a play production? Would such other methods be as effective? Why or why not?
2. Divide the class into small groups. Have each group create a new set design for the opening Act of the play. Discuss what changes were made, and why.
