Objective

Students will meticulously analyze the different elements of the collection's cover art in order to deepen their understanding of the connection between the work's themes and the cover art that is chosen to underscore these themes.

Visual literacy is a very important skill to foster in today's world and the vivid artwork featured on the cover of Vintage Hughes provides an excellent opportunity to teach students skills in visual literacy. One edition of the collection features a cover designed by JoAnne Metsch. The cover features a profile photograph of Langston Hughes in which the top of Hughes’s head is cut off. In this way, the appearance of the collection’s cover suggests that Langston Hughes’s ideas all lie within the pages of the text, rather than in his image furnished on the cover.
