Objective
The objective of this Daily Lesson is to acquaint students with mythological and literary background information in order to increase their engagement with and comprehension of Venus and Adonis. Long before Shakespeare wrote his version of the Venus and Adonis story, the Roman poet Ovid told the story in Metamorphoses. Of course, Ovid himself drew from an already long tradition of retelling the stories of the Greek and Roman gods. This lesson acquaints students with the mythological Venus and Adonis and with Ovid's telling of the tale, and then it asks students to analyze basic features of Ovid's telling.
