1. Describe the relationship between Rose and Lissa when they are introduced in Chapter 1.

Lissa is a Moroi vampire of noble birth. Rose is a dhampir. They have been best friends since kindergarten. After a car accident that should have killed them both, Lissa heals herself and brings Rose back from the dead. This caused Rose to have a special bond to Lissa, allowing her to sense Lissa's feelings and to enter her mind and see through her eyes.

2. Why are Lissa and Rose living together in Portland?

They have run away from St. Vladimir's Academy, a school for young vampires and their guardians. They have been living in Portland together for two years, trying to hide from the guardians from the academy.

3. Why does Dimitri appear in the first two chapters?

Dimitri is a guardian from the academy. He has tracked Rose and Lissa to Portland, and has come to take the girls back to the academy.
