Beartown is described as a small community in the forest. Some people say that no roads lead there. That roads just pass by. The economy is poor. The factory cuts its workforce every year. The town seems to shrink every year. The town has an ice rink, but not much else.

The narrator says that Beartown lost its way. A star hockey player raped a girl. When the girl and boy said different things about what happened, the town believed the boy, because if the girl was lying, life could go on as normal. When the truth was revealed, the people of Beartown fell apart taking the town with them. Then the town lost its way.
