• In Chapter 1, the narrator says that the town of Beartown fell because of violence.
• Beartown is a small community located in a forest.
• The town economy is not strong, and the local factory is always cutting the workforce.
• The town seems to shrink from year to year.
• The one thing the town does have is an ice rink.
• This is important, because hockey is life in Beartown.
• Life is hard, but Beartown people just grin and says that life is “supposed to be hard” (1).
• Then a boy, the star of the hockey team, raped a girl.
• The townspeople chose to believe the boy, because they wanted life to go on as usual.
• People took sides, and when the truth was revealed, the town fell apart...
