Lesson 1 (from "Cheetah" - "Let it Burn")
Objective
This lesson introduces students to the nonfiction book Untamed by Glennon Doyle. Students will read the Prologue and first two chapters of the memoir and will identify and discuss the book’s genre, structure, and narrative style. Untamed is part-memoir, part self-help book. Doyle’s narrative describes her emergence from the cages that society has inflicted upon women, her divorce, and her subsequent second marriage to former Olympics soccer player Abby Waumbaugh.

Research Activity: Take time in class to conduct research on author Glennon Doyle, her works, and the publication and critical reception of Untamed. What genre do Doyle’s works typically fall into? What are common themes in Doyle’s writing? What honors and/or awards has Doyle earned?
Group Assignment: Assign students to groups of 3-4 each. As a group, read the Prologue, “Cheetah,” Chapter 1, “Sparks,” and Chapter 2, “Apples.” As a group, discuss...
