Lesson 1 (from Part I (Prologue - Chapter 2))
Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to analyze Feldman's relationship with her grandmother, Bubby. After Feldman's parents both effectively abandon her at a young age, she goes to live with her grandparents Bubby and Zeidy, both Hasidic Satmar Jews, an extremely conservative Orthodox sect. At Bubby's and Zeidy's, Feldman is required to speak Yiddish and adhere to strict rules. But Bubby's kitchen is a source of warmth and comfort for Feldman, and she feels more warmth from Bubby than from any other member of her family.
