Objective
Students will study the quote by Benjamin Tammuz that precedes the narrative and consider how this sets up expectations for the reader.
The author chooses to start the novel with a Quote from Benjamin Tammuz that focuses on secrets. This decision helps set the tone for a possible theme of the novel about the importance of secrecy. The Quote foreshadows a theme and provides an interpretative lens in which to follow while reading.
Lesson
Writing Activity: Read the quote at the start of the novel. Decide how it may connect to a theme of the novel. Why do people keep secrets? Why do people choose not to share certain information? Per the quote, what are the emotions tied with secret-keeping? Take 2-3 minutes to write. Share ideas with partner for 2-3 minutes.
