Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to analyze Peralta's relationship with his mother, Maria Elena. Peralta's mother makes the difficult choice to remain in America as an undocumented immigrant while his father returns to the Dominican Republic. Maria is relentless in fighting for her two sons, making sure she cares for them and finds the best educational opportunities possible for them. Peralta obviously admires his mother, even from a young age, and he feels protective of her.
