Lesson 1 (from Part I (Chapters 1 - 6))
Objective
The objective of this Daily Lesson is for students to analyze Klune's development of Wallace's character in Part I. In Chapter 1, the reader learns that Wallace is a rather heartless workaholic who has little patience or regard for others' feelings. When he dies suddenly of a heart attack, only a few people attend his funeral, and he is not remembered fondly by his acquaintances. When Mei delivers him to Charon's Crossing and Hugo, though, Klune just begins to offer the readers glimpses into a potential capacity for change in Wallace.

Class Discussion: What do you think Klune wants the reader's first impression of Wallace to be? How does Wallace's conduct with Mrs. Ryan in his office set the reader's expectation for Wallace's attitudes and actions? How does Wallace feel at his own funeral?
